When you just can’t let it go.
Former childhood sweethearts Tess and Ford are experts at howling: an ancient Celtic ritual for processing tragedy through one day of highly supervised lunacy. Together they’ve helped hundreds of desperate people on the worst days of their lives. But when Ford calls distraught on the edge of Valentine’s Day to howl over the notorious woman who broke them up, it’s a conflicted calamity for Tess.
To make matters worse, Ford invites Terry, a wealthy groupie of his New Age Ministry, who knows nothing of howling. With the awkward pact made, Ford grabs onto his lifelong dream of competing in a legendary Montana cardboard sled contest that starts the next morning. He thinks he can find his old self there, and Tess hopes that will include how he used to feel about her.
Pushed to their limits on the journey from Albuquerque, Tess falters as Ford wreaks havoc, and the presence of newbie Terry prevents them from getting help through the secret howling network, a mythical group Terry soon suspects is another make-believe component of Tess and Ford’s many games. Pitted against the elements, the law, and sometimes each other, they struggle to survive each twist and turn until the shocking truth behind Ford's behavior is finally revealed.
